Time to Panic in the Bronx?

As any Yankee fan would tell you, George Steinbrenner is turning over in his grave after the way this years team has started. The lineup has looked elderly, unproductive, and inefficient with runners in scoring position. Starting pitching on the other hand has not been the root of their losses, but in many instances they've been one pitch away from capturing a win. One bright spot has been the bullpen combo of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, who after a few days ago had combined for 15 Ks facing just 16 batters.

Although the bullpen is something to speak highly of, they can't help a ball club win when they're getting blown out on a daily basis. The likes of A-Rod, Tex, Ellsbury, and Headley have flat out not been getting it done. The inconsistency has stretched from top to bottom of the Yankee lineup on their 7 of 9 game losing streak.

It has also stretched into the starting rotation. Tanaka has been eh, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.06 ERA. Eovaldi, Severino, and Pineda on the other hand have been killing them. Eovaldi cannot make it through a lineup once before team's jump all over his flat fastball. Severino has looked anything but what he showed last season, which was very impressive. This year his slider isn't getting him strikeouts, he can't spot his fastball, and this has ultimately lead to him being 0-2 with a 4.86. Lastly, Michael Pineda is a guy who relies heavily on his slider for strikeouts. When that isn't going well for him, he tries to force pitches over the plate and it's where he has been getting hurt thus far. His 5.29 ERA through the first 3 starts clearly identifies the flaws in his game, and he will have to be better for the Yankees to make the playoffs.

Right now, there is no reason to panic. However, Yankee fans certainly have to be worry-some about a 5-9 start to the year. With the Rays coming to town this weekend and another divisional series against the Red Sox, there is no shortage of AL East action. By no means are these series make or break, but it would certainly ease the minds of Yankee fans everywhere if they could win the rest of April and perhaps even May. Let's focus on winning a series against the Rays with the veteran left-hander CC Sabathia on the bump.
