While everyone was busy overreacting and freaking out about how the Mets weren't good as a whole in the early stages of the season, the real reason to panic was Matt Harvey.
Harvey, who has been one of the best pitchers in baseball during his career, has looked out of whack. Yes, he got the W yesterday, but it was against the Braves. He hasn't lasted more than six innings in each of his four starts, and he stands with a 5.24 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. He also has stopped striking people out, which is a clear indicator that his stuff has gotten worse since last year.
On April 16th Mets' pitching coach Dan Warthen told CBS Sports, "Harvey is collapsing his back leg in the stretch. Hurts consistency." He did call it "easily correctable", but I don't want my all-star pitcher having mechanical problems at all. He did look a little better yesterday, and seemed to be more confident in his stuff, but still, Met fans do NOT want to see any kind of setbacks from him.
Again, its only week four, but there is some cause for concern, especially when your pitching coach is telling the media about it.
In opposite news, how about Noah Syndegaard. At age 23, the Mets have a future Cy Young Award winner in their stable. The guy is actually filthy. The best stuff of any starter in the majors behind Kershaw and Arrieta. He throws a 100 MPH fastball, a 95-97 MPH slider, A 97 MPH SLIDER!!!!, and a 90-91 MPH changeup. What the fuck. The guy is an animal and his 3-0, 0.90 ERA, 29 Ks prove it.
Yes, Harvey has been a little worrisome, but I honestly think that he will be okay. I truly do believe Warthen when he says his problems are correctable.
And with Thor doing what he is doing, the Mets will be just fine.
