Following a lackluster performance from a struggling Michael Pineda Sunday, Nathan Eovaldi lead the Yankees to victory last night. Eovaldi carried a no hitter into the 7th inning when Nomar Mazara hit what would have been a grounder to shortstop, but the shift had left the defenders out of position. Nonetheless, Eovaldi flashed just how good his stuff can be. He came away with a win after allowing just 2 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 6 Rangers. As of late, Eovaldi has been getitng roughed up, so let's hope this start gives him a confidence boost to stay on the right track.
As for tonight, it's a struggling Luis Severino (0-2, 4.86) against AJ Griffin (2-0, 3.18). To be honest, I'm particularly interested in tonight's game because I am starting to get worried about Luis Severino. Yes, the bullpen failed the Yankees last week when Severino went 6.0 IP with just 2 earned against the A's. However, his opponents batting average is .352 and he has yet to show the same kind of repertoire he possessed in 2015. Severino has the kind of stuff where he should be challenging hitters earlier on in counts, instead of wearing himself out over the course of the game. With a pretty talented Ranger lineup in front of him tonight, I would really like to see him go right after them. Especially because this is a Rangers team that is struggling as of late, having scored just 5 runs on their 4-game losing streak.
The Yankee lineup faces the right-hander AJ Griffin, who after showing promise a few years back is just coming off Tommy John surgery now. In 47 starts with the A's in 2012 and 2013, Griffin went 21-11 with a 3.60. Let's hope the Yanks can bounce on him tonight as they have to face a lefty tomorrow in Martin Perez.
Expect to see A-Rod tonight (negative MRI on oblique) and don't expect fire throwing Aaron Hicks (shoulder bursitis) until this weekend .
